Whats New August

Whats New August

Hi everyone and welcome to August’s issue of What’s New. We have received a great response to our Senior Pet Focus which is fantastic as it gives us an opportunity to identify early warning signs of diseases in our older pets and give them the care they so truly deserve. Early detection of diseases can often lead to good control or even resolution of their problems as compared to advanced diseases which may not respond to treatment. Our Senior Focus runs till the end of September so be sure to book your furry senior family member in soon!

This month we will discuss a commonly seen problem in dogs and cats – vomiting, tummy ache and diarrhoea. This is a very common problem we see in both cats and dogs and whilst sometimes it is just a case of mild gastro due to our pets eating things they shouldn’t be eating, it can also be an indication of many more complex or severe problems. Therefor it is always better to be safe than sorry and get your pet checked by one of our vets. If your pet has a hunched up appearance when they are walking this can be a sign of pain in the abdomen. Some may even be reluctant to walk at all.

There are many causes of vomiting and abdominal pain – the more common problems include:

DISEASES IN THE INTESTINES       OTHER DISEASES
  • Bacterial infections (e.g. Salmonella)
  • Viral infections (e.g. Parvovirus)
  • Parasitic (worms)
  • Change in diet
  • “Garbage eating”
  • Cancer
  • Obstruction (balls, corn cobs, honky nuts, socks…you name it)
  • Pancreatitis
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver disease
  • High blood calcium levels
  • Diabetes
  • Infection in uterus (pyometra)
  • Other metabolic disease

As you all can see, vomiting can be an indications of many conditions requiring veterinary attention. Tests performed may include blood and urine tests, faecal tests, abdomen x-rays and ultrasound. Sometimes we may need to surgically explore the abdomen to get a diagnosis. All of these procedures can be performed at our Midland Hospital.
